Teaching

I am one of the lecturers at the department of biology. I am responsible for plant morphology and systematic botany. You will most likely encounter me in the Bachelor’s ‘Pflichtmodule’

  • Bio-06 (Biodiversität der Pflanzen) and
  • Bio-07 (Ökologie mit Bestimmungsübungen)

Internships, projects, theses etc.

Please contact me via email, if you are a student of the University of Bonn and interested in working on a botanical topic or one of my research interests.

Research interests

Besides being a botanist, I am a palynologist and paleobotanist. I am interested in

  1. paleoecology and vegetation dynamics especially in the context of environmental stress and (mass) extinction events
  2. plant evolution with focus on early angiosperms based on the fossil pollen record
  3. morphology (incl. teratology), taxonomy, nomenclature; applying and innovating these fundamental tools to conduct palynological and (paleo-)botanical research

Besides 'classical' microscopy methods, such as light and scanning electron microscopy I employ fluorescence and especially advanced confocal laser scanning approaches to offer new perspectives on notoriously small pollen and spores.

My main temporal focus has been the Mesozoic (especially the Triassic and early Cretaceous), but I am interested in all ages and events that offer interesting insights into plant evolution in the past and present.
