Research Topics

  • Loasaceae comprises 20 genera in four subfamilies with more than 300 species overall. They are typically covered with a dense, complex indument of various trichome types, including unicellular stinging trichomes, and these trichomes play an impressive role in protecting plants from herbivore attack. Biomineralization is a common process in higher plants, but the range of well-known biominerals is rather limited to silica, calcium carbonate and calcium oxalate. Despite of this fact, the presence of mineral deposits in the trichomes of higher plants has not been exclusively discussed so far. The aim of this project to investigate development stages of stinging and scabrid-glochidiate trichomes, process of mineralization and biomineralization patterns across a range of representatives of the family Loasaceae.
  • Stinging trichomes have been described in a few genera from a range of different angiosperm families: Euphorbiaceae, Hydrophyllaceae, Loasaceae, Namaceae and Urticaceae. The objective of this project to investigate the complex patterns of biomineralization and functionality in stinging hairs across different families.
  • Biomineralization is relatively common and widespread phenomenon in higher plants. Particularly in trichomes, mineral deposition occurs at various locations. The aim of this project to investigate phylogenetic patterns of differential biomineralization across Boraginales.
